At Silverdawn children's day nursery our 2 – 3 year old group, a.k.a.‘The Tweenies' are based in the main building of the nursery.
The main room is divided into six main areas of construction, mark making, role play, small world, book corner and messy play. As children learn best through play, the day is carefully planned and the activities are focused in and around the six areas. The children are encouraged to develop at their own pace in a structured environment with defined behaviour parameters.
The staff record each child’s day in a ‘Daily Diary’. This includes details of what they have eaten, who and what they have played with and any activities that they have done during the day. For the children that are in nappies or toilet training, there is a section with any relevant details in.
The Tweenies also work with the Early Years Foundation Stage encouraging each child to become:
This is done through constant observations and close assessments to ensure that the activities planned are meeting each child's individual development needs.
A selection of their work and achievements is also collated in their ‘Progress File’. We ensure that throughout the year the children learn about the various festivals that are celebrated in other religions.
The Tweenies play outside every day. With our new outdoor area the children are able to free play outside as well as in. The staff work on a 1 – 4 ratio (1-3 for those who are 18 months to 2 years) with the Tweenies, usually with one extra member of staff to help out. The staff that work within the ratios are all qualified and have acquired great relationships with the children.
We also promote close liaison with all our parents, ensuring that a member of staff is always available for a chat both in the mornings when they bring their children and in an evening when they are collected. All parents are invited to phone the nursery at any point during the day if they wish to for any reason.
